Celebrating 70 years in Cleveland
Many towns have them - restaurants where folks go regularly,
as much for the atmosphere and memories,
as the "same dependable menu & service."
The Spot .... is Cleveland's ....
HOW IT ALL BEGAN...
During Roosevelt's New Deal era, two Atlantans began implementing their dream of opening one new diner per year in the South in their effort to boost economy and earn a living.
While expanding into Chattanooga,
they heard of a "hole in the wall" in nearby Cleveland on Ocoee Street. Officially opening in July 1937,
the name didn't became THE SPOT ... until much later ...
"Always on the alert for a bargain,
the original owners got a bargain on a lighted sign that said ... "
you guessed it...
One of The Spot's best loved managers, Chester Pirkle, served from 1939 until he retired in 1985, with a few brief exceptions during soldier duty in WWII - and another brief period of about a year. Chester remarked that "...the popularity of The Spot was due to the menu, the variety of people who came to eat, and the talking and cutting up that took place..." A local fireman once was jokingly said that "...The Spot was a place a person could get insulted and a meal - at the same time..."
The GRAND RE - OPENING in 2004, where many who had had their first Spot Burgers as children, enjoyed burgers and frosties -
just like the old days!
The Spot is located a half block south of the downtown courthouse square, on Ocoee Street. If you can't find it - just ask anyone!
